Welcome to my first blog post in 2016! I realize that it has been awhile since my last online post, but the fall was extremely busy with a new teaching assignment. However, there have been many exciting new developments with the project and more frequent posts can be expected over the next month or two. Now I need to catch up a bit...so I will go back in time to fill you in on some adventures from late summer/fall 2015... After finding King Brook Lake, I was keen to explore another preserve before going back to teaching in the fall. In late August, while visiting my parents in Fredericton on the weekend, I decided to head out early on a Saturday morning to Pickerel Pond Nature Preserve near Grand Lake. My dad joined me on this adventure as well! |
A main feature of this preserve is a marshy area named Estabrooks Pond adjacent to Maquapit Lake (see above). This was accessible by following a sand/gravel bank along the edge of the lake. It was a very calm and peaceful morning with some distant fog and occasional drizzle. It was probably around 7 AM by the time we first reached the pond. Although we tried to approach quietly, we did scare up a small group of blue herons as we reached the pond. There was plenty of wildlife to see throughout the visit.
I am quite certain that my choice for this preserve is to paint a composition featuring the pickerel weed plants in Estabrooks Pond. They were very plentiful in one end of the pond, and I quite enjoyed the arrowhead shapes and colours they presented.
