My wife Bridgette and I decided to attend the NB Nature Trust AGM on Grand Manan Island in late September. We arrived to the ferry terminal at 3:30 in Blacks Harbour on a Friday afternoon hoping to make the 5:30 ferry. We learned about the importance of making a ferry reservation because we had to wait until 9:00. Oh well...now we know...
On the upside, this gave us a lot of time to explore the Connors Brothers Nature Preserve at Pea Point in Blacks Harbour. It is really only about a 10-15 min. walk from where you park for the ferry. We explored it first between 3:30 and 4:30. The tide was coming in, so we didn't get out to the small island with the lighthouse. But the weather was beautiful and the skies were clear.

We came back for a second visit between 6:30 - 7:00 to catch the warmer evening colours and longer shadows as the sun was dropping. What strikes me most about this site as a painting subject is the coastal rocks. I am quite sure that they will be an important part of my first painting here. I am quite excited about capturing the warm sunset colours against the texture of the rocks. So in some ways, I'm glad we didn't make the earlier ferry.
I still hope to visit this site another time when the tide is low -- which should hopefully offer the opportunity to explore the island with the lighthouse.
There are also some new trails that I want to check out. We found out about them the following day after meeting more members of the NB Nature Trust.
