It was a tremendous experience to see these preserves from the air, many of which I had already visited on land or by boat. However, it was the first time I was able to see the Western Isles, South Wolf Island, New River Island and L'Etang Islands. I have since been kayaking around the Western Isles (which will be the subject of my next post). The other three are definitely strong candidates for being painted from an aerial perspective. I know for sure that one of my next paintings will be L'Etang Islands from this perspective. It is a site that is truly spectacular when seen from the air.
It was especially neat to revisit a site from the air that I've already painted. In this view of Pea Point, I was able to spot the pond from my painting, Early Evening at Pea Point:

Each year the Nature Trust conducts an aerial monitoring of many of their nature preserves in the Fundy area, including some of the least accessible sites. This year I was invited to join the flight along with board member, Walter Emrich, who conducted the monitoring. From the air, we were able to experience spectacular views of nine nature preserves in the Bay of Fundy:
- Navy Island
- Pagan Point
- Western Isles (Barnes, Mowat, Little Mowat, Nubble Islands)
- South Wolf Island
- New River Island
- L'Etang Islands
- Connors Brothers (Pea Point)
- Dick's Island
- Caughey-Taylor (Sam Orr's Pond)
